The United Kingdom

In legal and sovereign terms it may be argued that the United Kingdom (Great Britain) begins in the time of King Alfred the Great, at which time Great Britain did not even exist.

However, the reason for reference to England and King Alfred, preceding the uniting of England with Scotland by over 800 years, is due to the fact that the commonising of English law (basing the law upon the customs and practices of the people forming laws reflecting those practice) by Alfred the Great in many ways defines the very beginning of English, such that may be said to define England better than any other factor. Not only was common law instigated by King Alfred, but also Parliament.
